New Places to Stay Along Highway 1

Hearst Castle, vineyard rows, the beach at your doorstep: Highway 1 gives you plenty to wake up to. This fall and winter, a handful of new stays put you right in the middle of the magic.

Avila Lighthouse Suites

Avila Beach House Opens in Avila Beach

Steps from the sand, Avila Beach House’s redesigned guest suites inspire the kind of serenity that rolls in with the tide. Sun-bleached textures and coastal colors fill the space, pulled straight from the shoreline just outside. The same easy, welcoming spirit that’s always drawn families here hasn’t gone anywhere, it’s just been totally refreshed.

Hampton Inn Coming to San Simeon

Your Hearst Castle home base: this fall, a newly renovated Hampton Inn gives you a smooth landing that makes the whole day easier. Hot breakfast, a heated pool, a fitness center and guest laundry await after a morning with Hearst Castle, an afternoon with the elephant seals or a drive north toward Ragged Point’s wild edge. Whatever shape the day takes, this is where rest comes easy.

Two Palms Motel Opens in Cayucos

Cayucos keeps things simple, and the new Two Palms Motel fits right into the scene with seven modern rooms, a short walk to the water and an even shorter stroll into town. Laetitia Estate House Opens in Arroyo Grande

Relax, there’s room for everyone at Laetitia Estate House, recently opened at Laetitia Vineyard. Five en-suite bedrooms sleep up to fourteen, vineyard rows on one side, the vast Pacific on the other. New Food & Drink Experiences

Grab your fork, raise a glass. Edna Valley’s getting a new four-part destination, Center of Effort’s pouring seasonal pairings and Cambria’s dishing up fifties nostalgia.

Edna Brings Multi-Faceted Culinary Experience to Edna Valley

Fine dining, a family-friendly market, a tasting room and a distillery all harmonize under one roof at Edna Valley’s newest addition, led by Michelin-starred chef Jeremy Fox. Ingredient-driven and Central Coast-sourced from the start, the space opens in phases this fall, pouring regional wines and craft spirits alongside a market built for grabbing something to go, one more reason to let the drive through Edna Valley slow into an afternoon or an evening spent savoring.

Center of Effort Launches Seasonal Lunch & Wine Pairing

Five courses, five pours, one unmatched afternoon: Center of Effort’s new seasonal lunch pairs a chef-driven menu with the vineyard’s own estate wines, each course meant to be lingered over, each layer of flavor given room to unfold on your palate. Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Rhône varietals mingle alongside seasonal, Edna Valley-grown ingredients, set against the same coastal vines that grew the grapes in your glass.

Cambria New Diner Brings Retro Dining to Cambria

Malts, onion rings and a fun-loving jukebox mood make the season even more festive at Cambria’s newest 1950s diner, where simple pleasures come with a side of classic fries. Cleverly named “Cambria New Diner”, their cooked-to-order burgers and retro design make for a crowd-pleasing stop; kick up your feet and enjoy the old school ambiance.

New Things to Do & Discover

Yoga at Biddle Ranch Vineyard

SLO Yoga Launches the Ritual Series

On Highway 1, every stop is a revelation. This season’s new experiences range from sweet-scented self care rituals to a coastal park still taking shape, plus fresh reasons to browse Cambria’s shelves.

Regain your center at a class that goes well beyond simple stretching. SLO Yoga’s new Ritual Series pairs a full yoga session with fragrance work, in partnership with Los Osos-based FableRune. Local teacher Heather Okimoto leads the practice every second Sunday of the month, weaving well-being-boosting scent into each pose so the hour lingers with you well after you’ve rolled up the mat.

Future Toro Creek Park Takes a Major Step Forward

You’ll soon be able to rejoice in the sound of birdsong and surf in the hills above Morro Bay. The first 750 acres are already secured for Toro Creek Park, the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County having acquired the land as the first phase of a future park planned to stretch from Del Mar Park through Alva Paul Canyon, eventually reaching about 1,800 acres. Hiking and biking trails, nature access points and long-term camping accommodations are all part of the vision, though the land isn’t open to visitors just yet.

Two new storefronts have opened in Cambria, each sure to brighten your stroll through town:

The Mincing Mockingbird Opens in Cambria

Original artwork, illustrated books, prints and paper goods fill the shelves at The Mincing Mockingbird, a shop built by artists and writers Kim Bagwill and Matt Adrian, proof that retail therapy works best with a sense of humor. Expect quirky gifts and a wink around every corner, the kind of place where a quick look turns into an hour of fun.

Salty Pages Opens in Cambria

Salty Pages brings the cozy, coastal spirit of an independent bookstore to Cambria, with fiction, poetry, classics and literary and speculative titles filling the shelves alongside journals, stationery and gifts. Order a steaming cup of coffee, settle into the outdoor seating nook and bring the dog along, there’s no rush.

Make a Highway 1 Holiday Weekend of It

The best gifts on Highway 1 are found in small shops with friendly shopkeeps and shelves stocked by hand. Turn a weekend of holiday shopping into a full Highway 1 getaway. Browse, linger, see what lights up your eye. The joy is in the search.

Duck into one of the storefronts lining Cambria and Cayucos, full of character and filled with trinkets you can’t find anywhere else. Pick up a box from Brown Butter Cookie Company in Cayucos, browse locally made body and home products from FableRune, or stop by The Luffa Farm for a fresh coastal-grown luffa.

Uncork the flavor of the season and bring home a bottle of locally grown and crafted olive oil from Tiber Canyon Ranch, or pull into a Central Coast winery for a bottle or two worth wrapping up.

Time your holiday weekend just right, and a holiday market or event is waiting just down the road. Happy hunting.
